I’m a big proponent of using sauces to elevate any dish. It can really take something to the next level. This easy and delicious avocado crema does just that – it’s amazing!
What I love about it is its texture – it’s light and creamy thanks to the use of Greek yogurt. As for achieving the perfect flavor, fresh lime juice, cilantro, and garlic are key.
Whenever I make fish tacos, I always make sure to make avocado crema as well. They’re simply made for each other, and the same goes for my crispy chicken taquitos.

Ingredient Notes
The ingredients I used in this recipe are very simple. As always, the quantities can be found in the recipe card down below, but I wanted to provide a few notes here that I hope you find helpful:
- Ripe avocados: For the creamiest texture, look for ones that yield slightly to gentle pressure, but don’t feel mushy or too soft.
- Greek yogurt: Choose plain yogurt for its thick consistency and tangy flavor, which balances the richness of the avocados.
- Lime juice: Freshly squeezed is best. Adds brightness and acidity.
- Garlic: Use fresh garlic cloves for maximum flavor.
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro adds a pop of color, flavor, and extra freshness.
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Water: Used to thin out to dressing and to adjust the final consistency
How to Make It
This avocado crema is one of the easiest ones to make! Here’s how I make it.
Step 1 | Blend in food processor
Combine all the ingredients in a food processor. Process until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Gradually add water to taste to thin it out as needed.
Step 2 | Adjust to taste
Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or lime juice if needed. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve immediately along with your favorite Mexican dishes or protein. I included some of my favorite pairing recommendations below!
How to Adjust Consistency and Flavor
- If too thick: Add more water and continue combining in the food processor.
- If too thin: Add more yogurt or ripe creamy avocados.
- If too bland: Add more lime juice for brightness and acidity, cilantro, as well as garlic and salt.
- If too pale: Add more cilantro.
How to Store
Because avocado naturally turns brown when it comes into contact with air (oxidation), it’s important to store it properly.
Here’s how I always do it (it’s the same method I use to store guacamole):
- Spread in an airtight container.
- Place plastic wrap over the crema, making sure it’s directly and completely touching it to prevent contact with air. Cover and secure with the lid tightly.
- Refrigerate for 1 to 2 days. After that, it can start to turn brown.
I like to use these secure airtight containers that come with latched lids, which makes them extra airtight for longer storage and freshness.
Serving and Pairing Ideas
This avocado crema goes well with so many dishes, but especially tacos and anything Mexican-Inspired.
It also pairs really with just a simple Lemon Grilled Chicken or my favorite Marinated Grilled Shrimp!

Recipe FAQs
Yes! Either a blender or food processor will work just as well.
Yes! Sour cream will yield a richer consistency and flavor, so you may want to use a little bit less.
About 1 to 2 days when stored in an airtight container. However, if possible, I’d recommend making it fresh, as it takes only 5 minutes.
I’d highly recommend making it fresh. While you can technically make it 1 day ahead, the quality of the flavor and color starts to decrease when stored.

Tips for Success
- Use ripe avocados for the creamiest texture. Ripe avocados yield slightly to gentle pressure, but don’t feel mushy or too soft.
- Adjust the consistency and flavor to taste. For example, if it’s too thick, combine with more water. If too thin, add more yogurt or avocado. For more flavor and vibrance, adjust with cilantro, lime juice, garlic, or seasonings.
- If not serving immediately, I’d recommend covering the crema with plastic wrap, making sure it’s directly touching it.
- The lime juice keeps the avocado crema from turning brown, so be sure to use a generous amount to taste.
- For maximum freshness and taste, use freshly squeezed lime juice and fresh garlic cloves.

Avocado Crema
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 medium ripe avocados
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 large clove fresh garlic
- ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Juice of 1 large lime - plus more to taste
- 3 to 4 tablespoons water - or as needed to thin out the dressing
Instructions
- In a food processor, combine all the ingredients. Pulse and process until it’s smooth and fully combined, gradually adding water to thin it out.
- Adjust to your preferred consistency. For example, if it's too thick, mix in some more water. If too thin, add in extra yogurt or avocado. And for an extra boost of flavor, use more cilantro, lime juice, or fresh garlic.
- Serve immediately. Enjoy!
Notes
- Storage: Store in an airtight container, with plastic wrap directly touching the surface of the cream to prevent oxidation (browning). It will last 1-2 days in the fridge.
- I would not recommend freezing.
- Greek yogurt: Sour cream or regular plain yogurt.
- Lime: If you don’t have limes, lemons work just as well.
