I created this recipe because I couldn’t choose between watermelon and mangoes! They are my two favorite summer fruits, and together they are perfection.

Ingredient Notes

- Watermelon: Use seedless watermelon for quick prep. Make sure the watermelon is ripe – it should have a yellow spot and feel heavy for its size.
- Mangoes: I use honey mangoes here. They should give a little when pressed gently, and smell very fruity and aromatic.
- English cucumber: Adds a crisp crunch. There is no need to peel English cucumbers since their skin is thin.
- Fresh basil and mint: Fresh. Gives the salad a slight aromatic herby profile, with fresh pops of mint. Mint can be strong if you add too much. I used only a small handful.
- Feta cheese: Crumbled feta brings that creamy, briny contrast to the sweet fruit. Save a little extra for a final garnish!
- Blackberries: Added at the end for a beautiful pop of color and tart flavor!
- For the Honey Lime Dressing: A simple whisk of fresh lime juice, extra virgin olive oil, honey, and a pinch of sea salt.
Ingredient quantities are listed in the recipe card down below.
Variations and Substitutions
- Limes: You can use lemons as well. Or combine with a squeeze of fresh orange juice.
- Mint: If you’re not a fan, you can omit it or use a little more basil.
- Cheese options: Queso fresco, cotija, fresh mozzarella pearls, halloumi (preferably grilled), goat cheese.
- Fruit additions: Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, peaches.

How to Make This Watermelon Mango Salad

- Cut the watermelon and mango into even-sized cubes.

- Combine the cubed watermelon and mangoes, cucumbers, basil, mint, and feta in a bowl. Set aside.

- Make the dressing: In a bowl, whisk the honey lime dressing ingredients until evenly combined. Add the dressing into the salad.

- Toss and serve: Gently toss to combine, being careful not to break the fruit. Top with fresh blackberries, and garnish with more feta and herbs on top.
Tips for Success
- Chill the fruit in the fridge before cutting for the most refreshing taste!
- Pick a ripe, sweet watermelon: Look for a watermelon with a large yellow field spot, a dull (not shiny) rind, and one that feels heavy for its size.
- Pick a ripe, sweet mango: Choose a mango that gives slightly when gently squeezed and has a sweet, fruity aroma near the stem. It should be yellow with orange or pink spots, with very little or no green.
- Best type of mango: Some mangoes are non-fibrous and ultra smooth, like the ones I used in this recipe called “honey (ataulfo) mangoes.”
- There’s a common variety of mango called “Tommy Atkins,” but these are quite fibrous. If possible, avoid it.
- Olive oil may seem like an odd ingredient in this watermelon mango salad, but you’ll be surprised how well it goes. You only need a little bit.
Make Ahead Tips
To prep for this watermelon mango salad ahead, you can dice up the fruit and cucumbers up to 1 day ahead and keep refrigerated. You can also make the dressing ahead and store separately.
Cut watermelon stays fresh for a few days in the fridge, but if you want the crunchiest bite, the fresher the better.

Recipe FAQs
I love adding cherries, blueberries, strawberries, or peaches.
Just 1 tablespoon of olive oil adds a silky finish that pairs perfectly with the feta. If you prefer an oil-free dressing, use 1 extra tablespoon of fresh lime juice instead.

Notes
- Mango varieties: Use Honey mangoes (aka ataulfo mango) for a smooth, non-fibrous texture. Avoid “Tommy Atkins” mangoes if possible, as they are fibrous.
- Ripe mangoes yield slightly to gentle pressure, smell aromatic, and are yellow with orange or pink tones (very few green spots).
- Pick a ripe watermelon: Select a seedless watermelon that has a yellow field spot to ensure ripeness and feels heavy for its size.
- Chill the fruit in the fridge before dicing to maximize crispness!
- Toss gently to prevent bruising or breaking the fruit. They can be a little delicate.
- Olive oil: You’ll be surprised at how good a little drizzle is! If you’d rather not use oil, replace with more fresh lime juice.
- Make ahead: Dice fruit and cucumbers up to 1 day in advance and refrigerate. Prepare the dressing separately. Combine just before serving.
- Storage: This salad is best served fresh, but leftovers will store for 1 day in the fridge. After that, it will get soggy.
- Citrus: Substitute lime juice with lemon juice, or blend it with fresh orange juice.
- Cheese: Swap feta for queso fresco, cotija, fresh mozzarella pearls, goat cheese, or grilled halloumi.
- More fruit mix-ins: Mix in or garnish with blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, or cherries.
