Burgers are always a favorite in my house. These Hawaiian teriyaki burgers with grilled pineapple are perfect for a nice summer dinner. They are so delicious and easy to make!
If there is one person in this world that loves pineapple to death, it is my husband. You should see the big smile on his face whenever we have it in our house. So when I made these Hawaiian teriyaki burgers with grilled pineapple, it was like heaven on earth for him. These Hawaiian burgers are made with seasoned burger patties, Havarti cheese, teriyaki sauce, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and…you guessed it, grilled pineapple!
These Hawaiian burgers are seriously delicious and addicting. I love the sweet and tangy flavors from the teriyaki sauce and the refreshing bite of grilled pineapple rings. The perfect combo!
How to Make Hawaiian Burgers
Making this burger is really easy. It all starts with seasoning the ground beef thoroughly with my secret weapon: Worcestershire sauce!
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, ground black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Use your hands to combine, without over-mixing. Over-worked meat will result in tough meat patties.
- Form the burger patties, a bit bigger than the size of your burger buns and about 3/4 inch thick. Remember the patties will shrink when cooking. Using your fingers, make a depression in the middle so that the burger doesn’t puff up in the middle that much. Tip: Don’t make your burgers too thick so it doesn’t take too long to cook. Overcooked burgers = tough meat.
- Heat a grill to medium-high and oil the cooking surface. For medium, grill about 3 minutes on one side, and brush with some teriyaki sauce. Flip and grill for another 4 minutes. Top with cheese, cover, and cook for 1 minute.
- While burgers are cooking, grill pineapple slices on both sides until you get nice grill marks, about 2-3 minutes per side. While the pineapple is grilling, grill the onion rings.
- Assemble the burgers. I like to do it in this order: bottom burger bun, lettuce, burger patty, tomato slice, grilled pineapple, grilled onions, teriyaki sauce, top burger bun.
My favorite part is the teriyaki sauce because it gives the burgers lots of flavor and a unique touch. You can use your favorite teriyaki sauce. I really like Soy Vay’s brand “Island Teriyaki.” Not an ad, just a brand that I love and would highly recommend 🙂
Tips for Making the Perfect Burger Patties
I learned most of these tips for making awesome burgers from watching hours and hours of Bobby Flay’s shows on Food Network. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Don’t overwork the meat. Overworking the meat results in tough and chewy burger patties.
- Form the burger patties a bit larger the the size of the burger buns since they will shrink when cooking.
- Make a depression in the center so the burgers don’t puff up too much when cooking.
- Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy burgers. Lean ground beef will result in dry burgers.
- And MOST IMPORTANTLY, do NOT press down on the burgers! Pressing down on the burgers will result in the loss of the delicious juices of the burgers, and you’ll end up with flavorless and dry patties.
How Long to Cook the Burgers
Cooking times depend on the desired level of doneness. Per this burger grilling guide on Char-Broil:
- Medium-rare: 3 minutes on one side, 4 minutes on the other.
- Medium: 3 minutes on one side, 5 minutes on the other.
- Medium-well: 3 minutes on one side, 6 minutes on the other.
- Well done: 3 minutes on one side, 7 minutes on the other.
Hawaiian Burger Toppings
For these Hawaiian burgers, I used:
- grilled pineapple
- grilled onions
- a drizzle of teriyaki sauce
- Havarti cheese
- tomato slices
- lettuce (try butter lettuce, it’s so good!
And if you want to add more toppings, try avocado! For cheese, feel free to combine more than one type of cheese. I used Havarti cheese because I love the creamy texture. It’s so good!
I hope you enjoy these burgers! I’m sure it will become one of your favorites.
